Janice Lynn on her career as a nurse and writing Medical romances

We’re delighted to hand over the reins of our blog to the very capable Janice Lynn who talks about balancing being a nurse practitioner and writing Medical romances.

Janice talks more about how her career (and that of her family’s) inspires her novels, including her new book, The Single Mum He Can’t Resist.

Nursing is a profession that is dear to my heart. In addition to writing Medicals, I work as a nurse practitioner in a small town family practice. I have three daughters, a sister, two sister-in-laws, two aunts, and a cousin who are also nurses. I truly believe nursing is our life calling. Having so many family members (friends, too) who work in the profession is such a great resource for my stories.

The events of the past few years have certainly changed the landscape of healthcare. One of our daughters left a more traditional hospital ICU nursing position to take up travel nursing. It’s something that’s always fascinated me, so hearing of her new locale adventures is always interesting. Another daughter was an ICU nurse in Chattanooga, where The Single Mum He Can’t Resist is set. I gravitate toward writing stories set in the south because the language and how the characters think feels most natural. My daughter who lived and worked in Chattanooga graduated in December 2020, a rather rough time to begin an ICU nursing career due to staffing and supply shortages, amongst other virus-related stressors. She champed the role, often working extra shifts. I know she was a blessing to her patients by how much she cared about them and their families. I’ve visited many times, but seeing the city through the eyes of her working and living there made me love it even more.

When I was thinking about what story I wanted to write next, I knew I wanted a travel nurse hero who had  been shuffled around as a child to where every time he’d gotten close to someone/made new friends, he’d move again and have to start over. After a while, he quit letting himself get too close to anyone, and that carried over into adulthood, affecting his professional and personal life. Tristan Scott is that hero.

ICU nurse, Jenny Robertson had once embraced love, but had gotten badly burned. Abandoned by her son’s father, she’s done with romantic love. Focused on her job and son, she’s cut herself off from her friends and a life that involved much of anything outside of work and being a mom. She’s not even sure who Jenny is anymore beyond those two roles and that’s just fine by her. Providing a good life for Sawyer is her number one priority and she won’t risk letting anyone get in her way, not even a gorgeous travel nurse who says he wants to be her friend. I had so much fun making Tristan step outside his comfort zone to befriend Jenny who is just as intent to avoid him at every opportunity–right up until she doesn’t.

I guess one could say that my daughters inspired this book . They certainly provided the catalyst. I dedicated this one to my daughter, Reesee. Although she no longer lives and works in Chattanooga, she awed me with her dedication to her patients.
