We caught up Mills & Boon Medical author, Scarlet Wilson to find out more about her writing routine, advice and new book!

You write for the Mills and Boon Medical series which features high-stakes and high-pressure for the heroes and heroines. What’s your favourite thing about writing Medical romances?
The thing I like most about writing medicals is the whole world of opportunities it gives me. I’ve written everything from fire fighters, to small town GPs, to doctors, surgeons, nurses – even a doctor based at NASA and another at the White House. I’ve also based stories in places all over in the world, and even in few kingdoms I made up myself!
What, to you, are the most important elements of writing a good romance book?
It’s having a hero and heroine who I want to get their happy ever after, and feel as if they deserve it. If I don’t feel invested in my hero and heroine, why would anyone else?
What was the inspiration behind your new book, Snowed in with the Surgeon?
It was all the classic Christmas elements I love, snowed in, with high drama, in a small space! I also took a turn with this book and reflected the fact that many staff are leaving nursing and medicine now. Things are tough out there, and in one of my characters is in that space.
Could you tell us more about your favourite scene?
So, as a romance writer it should be a kissing scene, shouldn’t it? Well….actually, it’s kind of near the beginning when the avalanche hits and my hero and heroine are digging through the snow to find people. Time is very limited to rescue people after an avalanche, and I liked the thought of them watching every second while they tried to save everyone while working together for the first time.
Do you prefer writing summer or winter romances?
Not winter, Christmas! I’m always a Christmas girl!
What are your favourite character traits?
I am entirely predictable in making either my hero or heroine Scottish. Nothing like a grumpy Scots man or woman to up the ante in a scene and bring tension to a situation.
What advice would you give to a writer submitting their work to Mills & Boon?
Read all the lines, pick your favourite and follow the submission guidelines on the website. If you’re writing something that you love, and read a lot of, you will have a better chance of knowing what the team at Mills and Boon are looking for.
What are some of your favourite romantic films/tv shows? Any recommendations?
Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, Enchanted, Made of Honor and I just loved Ticket to Paradise with George Clooney and Julia Roberts. The embarrassing drunk dancing scene made me laugh out loud!
Last question! Flowers or chocolate?
How can you even ask? CHOCOLATE. Every. Single. Time.
