Writing for Mills & Boon
If anyone had told me when I got The Call, in February 2003 that fifteen years later I would be celebrating my 75th book with Mills & Boon, A Virgin for a Vow I would have said… What? Only 75?!!! Just kidding. I love writing romance and as soon as I finish one book I have another one in my head begging to be written.
It’s so much fun thinking of a story idea and characters to go with it, then doing the writing and revising and finally seeing the book in print- in multiple languages. And then reading the reviews and comments from readers- all of it is so richly rewarding. Oh, and did I mention I actually get paid to do what I love?
One of the things I’ve loved most about being a multi published romance author is the journey of self-discovery I’ve been on through the oftentimes difficult process of writing. Writing to deadline, writing when you’re sick or grieving or worried about a loved one, is not an easy task. So often over the last few years I have sat at my desk and thought about my readers and what they were experiencing in their lives and how my writing might help them to find a couple of hours of joy and escape, just as so many romance novels have done for me.
For romance writing is about happy endings, bringing out-of-balance people back into balance and harmony with others. I believe it can do the same for the people not just inside the book, but the ones reading it.
Writing Tips for Aspiring Authors
My advice to aspiring writers is to read as much as you can but also to write as much as you can. I don’t know who said this but it is important for writers to be both on the stage and in the audience. I read hundreds if not thousands of romance novels when I started out, but it was only through the process of writing that I learned how to write. And I am still learning. Every book I write teaches me something new and not just about writing, but also about myself. Getting published shouldn’t be the only goal you aim for. Being the best writer you can be is a much better one.
