Read her advice, it’s beautiful…

I’ll admit it, I’m a hopeless romantic.  But this year I’m newly single and staring down the barrel of my first Valentine’s Day alone has me a little on edge.  However, I have a plan to take the sting out of the overload of love invading the air.  Here are my top five strategies for surviving the day made for love when you don’t have one of your own.

1.      Acknowledge that you’d rather be with someone.  I mean, it isn’t weakness to admit that being in a relationship is your ultimate goal.  But there’s nothing wrong with being single either and holding out for the right person to compliment your life.  It isn’t enough to have a Valentine just because the calendar says you should.  Waiting for that perfect partner can be hard, but definitely worth it.

2.      Make plans! Don’t just sit at home on February 14th and wallow. Find the people in your life who are also single and plan something fun and outrageous.  While every restaurant will be packed, maybe your group decides to go ice skating or attend a wine tasting tour.  Be creative and think outside the box.  Make memories and laugh.

3.      Buy yourself something.  Okay, so Valentine’s Day is entirely commercial.  So what.  If red roses will put a smile on your face buy some.  You deserve them.  You don’t need another human being to validate how awesome you are…acknowledge that for yourself by indulging in whatever brings you happiness, especially if it’s chocolate.

4.      Wear something that makes you feel amazing.  Don’t spend the day in your PJs.  Put on your best dress and heels.  Spend some time on your make-up and hair.  There might not be anyone in your life to appreciate the effort, but you will.  I don’t know about anyone else, but there’s nothing like an amazing pair of shoes to have me feeling on top of the world.

5.      Celebrate the people that matter.  Who says a Valentine has to mean a romantic partner?  This day should be about acknowledging the people in your life that matter – friends, family, kids.  Tell everyone you care about that you love them, because they’re the ones who make every day brighter.
