I love reunion stories. Truly love them. Movies like Sweet Home Alabama make my heart happy. So whenever I get the chance to write one, I grab it and run.

I especially love stories where the couple is separated–seemingly by fate—only to later find themselves thrown back together. Does that mean that it’s an easy, “Oh hi! Glad you’re back, let’s pick up where we left off,” kind of tale? Not for my poor characters who have to work hard to get to a place where they can trust each other enough to give love another chance. In the meantime, they both will have gone on living life as though they would never see each other again. And at that shocking reunion, when they catch that first glimpse of the other person? There’s heartache and confusion that must be tackled head on. Then there’s that attraction that somehow never quite went away. It’s been simmering under the surface, only to erupt when they least want it to.

Misha and Lyndsey in The Surgeon She Could Never Forget are just such a couple. High School sweethearts, they thought they would always be together and lived as if that were true. They were young and free and totally in love. But their plans were torn apart just after graduation with the arrival of a terrible announcement. They would, in fact, not be together. They would be continents apart.

I will admit I cried while writing the prologue to the book. I sooooo didn’t want to put these characters through that separation. But to truly get them to where they needed to be, there was no other way. And so I wrote it. And I let it percolate for days before I dove into Chapter One. From there it was  a frenzy of writing as fast as I could, pausing here and there to savor certain moments as I went. I desperately wanted Misha and Lyndsey to make it to the finish line.

And when it was over? I didn’t want it to be over. I wanted to make that feeling last. So I didn’t mind the inevitable revisions that came across my desk. Or reading the final version of the story a third time. And you know what? I still cried at the same places as I had during the first draft. And the ending was just as satisfying.

Yep. I still love reunions stories. And I can’t wait to meet my next couple and see where their journey will take me!
