We are thrilled to welcome Sophie Pembroke as a guest author on our blog. Sophie talks about the inspiration behind her romance trilogy, The Heirs of Wishcliffe and what readers can expect from each story.

When I decided to write a trilogy for Mills & Boon True Love, I knew from the start I wanted them to all circle around one of my favourite themes: Homecoming.

I think the places we grow up, and the people around us as we develop our sense of self, have a huge impact on our lives. They stay with us no matter what we choose to do after we leave to pursue our own futures.

Coming home as an adult means you see it through different eyes, because you’re not the same person who left. And the people you left behind see those changes in you, too.

You know what they say – you can never truly go home again.

The Heirs of Wishcliffe trilogy is set mostly around the town of Wishcliffe and the surrounding villages, on the south coast of England – although the characters do take the occasional trip to Vegas, London, Paris and beyond.

At the heart of the stories are three men who have never felt at home, or that they belonged, in the places they grew up. And it’s going to take some very special women to help them find that place of belonging.

Vegas Wedding to Forever

First up, there’s Toby – the new Viscount Wishcliffe, following his brother’s tragic death. He’s been putting off coming home to Wishcliffe and taking on the title – and all the responsibilities – leaving them for his widowed sister-in-law Victoria to take care of.

But he can’t put it off forever. And when a last night of freedom in Vegas with his best friend Finn lands him with an unexpected wife, Autumn, he realises that maybe what he needs to help him face his future is a convenient bride at his side for back up!

Their Second Chance Miracle

Next, is Finn’s story. Finn was disowned by his father, who owned the neighbouring estate to Toby’s – in fact, his father sold the house, land, and all the family heirlooms just to stop Finn getting his hands on them.

But Finn has a plan to buy them all back, and make it a real home again. He just needs the help of antique expert, Victoria, to pull it off. If only she wasn’t the still-grieving widow of the man he respected as an older brother, and the only woman he’s ever loved, spending all that time together tracking down antiques would probably be a lot less tense…

Baby on the Rebel Heir’s Doorstep

The last story belongs to Max. As the illegitimate, never acknowledged, son of the old Viscount Wishcliffe, his childhood in the village of Wells-on-Water was miserable – and in retaliation, he acted out and turned into the local bad boy. He left the moment school was done – after one very memorable night with local girl, Lena – and never looked back.

But with Toby in charge up at Wishcliffe Hall, Max suddenly finds he has a place there again, and a new house, maybe even a family. But none of it can make him feel like he belongs – until he finds a mystery baby on the doorstep of his new home, with a note telling him that she’s his responsibility. Luckily for Max, Lena is there to help – and perhaps find some closure on their one, stolen, passionate night together all those years ago.

 

I loved writing these stories of three men finding their way home – not just to a place, but to the people they were meant to be and, of course, to true love.
