Mothers Day: Favourite Fictional Mothers!

A very Happy Mothers Day! To celebrate all things women, our authors share their most favourite fictional mothers: from Marmee in Little Women to Sarah Connor in Terminator!

  • The mothers in Jane the Virgin are my favourite! There are three generations of mothers in the show, and each of them is different, but special. The most important thing is the love and support they have for one another, which never fails to move me – Therese Beharrie
  • My vote is for Terminator’s Sarah Connor. She quickly hones herself into an awesome action heroine in her own right, defined by her duel determination to save her son and the world. And no matter what the subsequent sequels throw at her, she still rises to the top and looks great doing it twenty five years later! – Pippa Roscoe
  • I love Ellen O’Hara in Gone with the Wind. She is the epitome of kindness, generosity and understanding. She’s genteel on the outside, tough and realistic on the inside. I also love that Scarlett was smart enough to admire her own mother and aspire (although she fails) to be like Ellen – Bronwyn Scott
  • My favorite fictional mother is Marmee in Little Women. She is the perfect blend of understanding and toughness. She cares for her daughters while her husband is off at war but loves her husband enough to leave them to go to his side when he is injured. She sets a fine example for her girls of what a wife and mother should be – Susan Carlisle
  • I love Pamela, mother of Bridget Jones! Anyone who thinks a gherkin is the height of sophistication makes an awesome mother. And who hasn’t had a few runs in with gravy that requires sieving? I know I have. And the ‘Have it Oeuf’ scene—don’t even get me started. This level of hilarious mothering surely requires a mention…- JC Harroway
