Get to know Mills & Boon!
Publishing can be a bit of mystery at times. Sometimes even our authors only get to know a few of the names and faces that work behind the scenes! While we hope we make things look easy and that everything happens seamlessly (!), there are a lot of fabulous and talented people involved in getting our books out into the world and we thought you might like to meet them.
Last time Katie talked you through her Harry Potter obsession and this week Julia Steer, analyst supreme, takes her turn in the hot seat.
Hi Julia! To start off, tell us a bit about your job.
I’m an Analyst at Mills & Boon. I do fancy things in excel, try to predict the future with my Mills & Boon crystal ball for forecasting and budget purposes, and get to see how many books we sell. (And which heroes do the best!)
What do you like best about your role?
The variety! I come up against a lot of challenges day to day and have to think creatively as well as analytically. I love figuring out a new geeky excel formula.
What’s the hardest part of your role?
Stock management – sometimes our books just sell so fast I can’t get them replenished quick enough and you never know which title our customers will really madly fall in love with and create a sell out!
(A very nice problem to have!) What’s the best thing about working with romance books?
- I love our titles – we have some corkers!
- You get free books
- Lots of yummy men on covers around you
What are you reading at the moment?
Philippa Gregory – The Taming of the King. I love my historical romances! Plantagenets and the Tudors are my favourite!

Finally, share five things about you we may not know…
- I love football and used to play it up till a couple of years ago
- I am due my first baby in January (!!)
- I LOVE marmite
- I still love Winnie the Pooh and anything Disney
- When I sneeze I sound like a duck (apparantly!)
